EAL

English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a term used to describe learners who are acquiring English in addition to their first language(s). These students are a diverse group with varied educational backgrounds, experiences and English proficiency levels. They are simultaneously learning a new language and the academic content through that new language, which is often referred to as their “dual task”.

For educators, it is crucial to understand that EAL learners are not necessarily behind in their cognitive development; they are simply developing proficiency in another language and, with appropriate support, can thrive academically.

Outside the Box has a range of resources, both home-authored and from publishers around the world, to help educators with EAL students.  These are shown below and some are temporarily discounted on otb.ie/eal-promotion.
