Description

–  Applying Bloom’s Taxonomy in the Classroom

The Thinking Themes Series provides flexible, theme-based activities that support the development of thinking skills. In particular, the series provides structured opportunities for students to:

  • Engage in a variety of analytical, creative and critical thinking activities
  • Choose an area of study that interests them, from within a broad theme
  • Develop, practice, and improve their thinking skills
  • Develop research skills to become more independent learners
  • Begin to form and develop their own opinions

The activities have been designed using the structured opportunities that Bloom’s Taxonomy of thinking levels provides. The use of the taxonomy provides a guide for students as they move through activities that increase in complexity.

The themes allow a degree of flexibility in the way the ideas in the resource series are delivered. The themes are broad enough to cater for all levels and abilities of students and their interests. Blackline masters for each theme act as scaffolds to guide students’ learning through the broad range of possible areas of study. Assessment sheets for feedback, feedforward, self-assessment and tracking are provided.

The two books in the Thinking Themes series contain seven popular themes as follows:

  • Book A Themes: Journeys; Power; Treasure
  • Book B Themes: Changes; Structures; Water; Round and Around

About the authors:

Cathy Currie and Sally Robertson have taught together for several years at a rural school. Their teaching focuses on ‘rich’ topics which provide opportunities for students to work and think in-depth. They believe students need to participate in meaningful learning to extend their levels of thinking. This approach was the inspiration for writing these books.
