Description

Classroom and Library Activities that build information skills

Finding Your Way With Information is aimed at supporting students to develop and use effective information literacy skills. This structured, activity-based resource book is based on the understanding that developing effective information skills is an integral part of learning; that using the library is a regular and enjoyable part of school life; and that knowing how to choose and use resources for research helps to foster independent learners in the classroom.

Finding Your Way With Information takes a range of information skills and re-conceives them as lively and engaging teaching and learning activities in a photocopiable worksheet format.

Activities are divided into three sections:

  • Getting Into Information: this includes skill-building activities on posing questions and sub-questions, understanding the range of available resources, skim reading and speed reading, making notes, using your own words, presenting ideas
  • Gathering Information: this includes skill-building activities on using library resources effectively, including encyclopaedias, dictionaries, tables of contents, glossaries, indexes, on-line catalogues, the Dewey system, interpreting graphics, discriminating ‘good’ from ‘bad’, Web resources
  • Making Information Work For You: this includes skill-building activities on applying the learning and understanding from the previous sections to actual research projects, interviewing, and different forms of presenting research

An overview section at the start explains each activity, providing information on its purpose and the skills it can help to develop.
