Description

Classroom Strategies that Build Mapping Skills!

Find your Way Around Maps contains a wealth of fun and challenging activities that will help your students to become expert map readers!

If learners don’t understand the reason for a title, key, direction indicator or any of the other components of map, it is very hard for them to access information from it. This teaching and learning resource is designed to address that by providing teachers with strategies and activities that support the development of ‘map literacy’ in their students.

The contents of Finding Your Way Around Maps aims to take account of different student learning needs. Activities can be used as one-off s on an ‘as needed’ basis, or together as an entire unit.

All activities have a similar format:

  • A Teaching Sheet, that teachers can use to introduce, explain and discuss the concept and knowledge needed about each component of a map
  • A Student Worksheet that allows students an opportunity to practice the knowledge they have gained about that component of a map

Activity Topics include:

  • What a Map is for
  • Types of Maps
  • Keys
  • Titles
  • Directions
  • Latitude and Longitude
  • Meridians
  • Co-ordinates and much more!

Notes on each activity are located at the front of the resource and include a Learning Intentions for each activity, background information, what is needed to complete the activity and some suggestions on grouping students and possible instructional strategies.
