COURSE DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:
Designed and presented by Dr. Michele Dunleavy (MIC), this online course will provide Principals, Mainstream, Learning Support and Resource Teachers with the necessary knowledge and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to feel confident in including a child within a mainstream school. Participants will gain knowledge and understanding of such topics as:
- Contemporary understanding of ASD diagnosis
- ASD specific assessments tools
- Identifying pre-requisite skills to enable the student to gain meaningful access to the curriculum
- Providing appropriate ASD tasks and activities within schools’ Literacy and Numeracy goals
- Incorporating ASD teaching approaches into a teacher’s existing pedagogical repertoire
- School Self Evaluation to support the inclusion of pupils with ASD
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The course is divided into 5 modules:
- Overview of ASD
- Teaching approaches for ASD
- ASD specific assessments
- Inclusion and Integration
- Social skills development for pupils with ASD
COURSE PRESENTATION:
In the main, this course is presented using a series of voiced presentations. To support your engagement and interaction with the course you will be asked to consider particular aspects of course topics, read documentation, view videos or explore external websites. Time has been allowed, as part of the course, to complete these activities.

Dr. Michele Dunleavy has worked in the area of special educational needs and ASD in particular for a number of years. She has worked in special and mainstream schools, in resource teaching, as a special class teacher and was on secondment, as an SEN Advisor, to the Sesss – Special Education Support Service (now NCSE) from 2008 to 2014. Michele has completed a number of Post Graduate courses in Special Education including a M.St Autism and D.Ed Autism. Michele has also worked part-time at third level designing and presenting courses at undergraduate and post graduate level. Michele is currently Lecturer in Department of Educational Psychology, Inclusive and Special Education, Mary Immaculate College Limerick (2023).
