Niamh Garvey

Niamh Garvey is an Irish autistic author. She found out she was autistic when she was 34. This might seem quite old to discover that you’re autistic, but it’s not uncommon for people to reach adulthood or even old age, without knowing that they are autistic. Despite the fact that she is a registered nurse, she only began learning about what autism really is when one of her children got diagnosed as autistic.

Finding out that she was autistic came as a huge relief, as suddenly many of her life experiences made sense. Learning that she was autistic has been nothing but a positive experience and has allowed her to figure out how to make her life easier, calmer and happier.

Niamh is passionate about spreading correct and up-to-date information about autism, as so much information about autism is outdated, ableist and even harmful. Her books aim to support other autistic people to become better informed about their own autism, and to develop strategies that can directly improve their quality of life. She also writes and works to spread autism awareness to non-autistic people and society in general.
